Season finale of Boston-Orlando series
by David Murphy, Saturday, February 05, 2011
Orlando Magic at Boston Celtics
February 6, 2:30 PM on ABC
In the final game of their season series, the Orlando Magic travel to Boston to face the Celtics.
The two teams split their previous games with Orlando winning 86-78 at home, followed by a 109-106 Boston victory on January 17.
Both the Celtics and Magic are coming off of disappointing home losses in the last week. Last Thursday the Magic were dropped by Miami, 104-100; meanwhile Boston fell to Dallas, 101-97, after a Jason Kidd 3-pointer with less than 5 seconds remaining sealed the game.
There are certainly playoff implications for Sunday's contest. Boston sits at first place in the Eastern Conference while Orlando is fifth, setting up a possible 2nd-round matchup if the standings remain unchanged.
Keys to the game
Boston must at least stay competitive in the rebounding game. The Celtics are 37-12 for the season despite being 29th in the NBA in total rebounding. The Magic, meanwhile, are the league's fifth-best team on the boards, led by 13.7 from Dwight Howard. If the Celtics can limit Orlando's second-chance points by controlling the defensive glass they have a very good chance of winning.
For Orlando, Dwight Howard needs to start hitting his free throws. The center is shooting a career-low this season from the charity stripe and missed 10 in a four-point loss to Miami last Thursday. In his last four games Howard has hit just 12 of 32 attempts from the free throw line. Boston will have plenty of fouls to give with great depth in the front court, although Shaquille O'Neal's status is questionable and he sat out Boston's loss to Dallas.
League Pass Game of the Week
by David Murphy, Saturday, February 05, 2011
LA Lakers at Memphis Grizzlies
February 7, 8 PM, SportSouth
While the Lakers' title defense has hit some speed bumps, Memphis is clearly a team on the rise.
Although LA maintains a 34-16 record, the team has been mired in trade rumors and lost three of its last four games, all coming at home.
On the other hand, the Grizzlies are playing their best basketball and have won 13 of 19 games in the New Year. Before seeing the Lakers on Monday, Memphis visits Houston on Saturday with a chance to build on their season-best 5-game winning streak.
Keys to the game
Although criticized for hogging the ball, Kobe Bryant is averaging 7.0 assists per game in LA's last four contests. However, the Lakers have dropped three of those games. Bryant should shoulder the scoring load early, and only look for his teammates once the defense is doubling him.
Memphis will rely on Zach Randolph to best the size of LA. In Memphis' winning streak, Randolph is putting up 21.6 points and 13.4 rebounds, and the Grizzlies will need to keep him rolling to make Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum expend energy defensively.
